01

The answer before you begin

If the expiry date seems to have disappeared from your smaller electronic inspection certificate, do not estimate it from the issue date, a previous garage receipt or the month when you bought the car. Use the official MLIT certificate-viewing application with the original certificate, or check a current inspection-record document through the appropriate official or workshop route. Confirm that the vehicle and record match before planning a booking. An electronic certificate is a physical document containing an IC tag; a photograph of the document cannot act as that tag.

This guide helps you organize the reading process, interpret the result and prepare a useful next question when something does not work. 車検.jp is an independent preparation website. It does not operate the government application, read your certificate, authenticate a downloaded record or retrieve live inspection data. You do not need to provide your chassis number, security code, address or certificate photograph to use our free date planner. Enter the confirmed expiry date yourself, then check the proposed schedule against your vehicle's current record.

Start with three questions: is the original certificate available, can you use a supported device, and what information are you trying to confirm? Someone checking a deadline needs a different next step from someone trying to correct an address. If the date has already passed, solving an app problem does not make the vehicle lawful to drive. Arrange a safe transport plan with the garage and consult the expired-inspection guide. The useful outcome is a verified date and a clear plan, rather than simply a successful scan on a phone screen.

02

Separate the original, the record and a photograph

Make a small inventory before troubleshooting. Put the physical electronic certificate in one category, the printed inspection-record details in another, and saved PDFs or photographs in a third. Their purposes overlap, but they are not interchangeable. The application needs the original document's IC tag for a reading. A paper printout can make the information easier to inspect, while a photograph can help you remember where a document was stored. Neither task turns the photograph into an electronic certificate.

Check when each saved record was obtained. A file downloaded before the latest renewal may still be a useful historical record, but it should not automatically control today's appointment plan. Registration changes can also make older information misleading. A sensible folder label records the vehicle nickname and the date of retrieval without exposing the full registration number in a shared household folder. Keep the original separately and know where it is stored. When you contact a workshop, describe which item you actually have rather than saying only that you have the certificate on your phone.

For example, a household might find a photograph from last year, a recent service invoice and a document wallet containing the original certificate. The invoice establishes that a service happened; it is not the easiest way to confirm the current inspection expiry. The original and a fresh official reading resolve that question more directly. If the original is missing, move to the reissue guide instead of repeatedly attempting to scan the image. If the original is present but reading fails, record the device and error before asking for help. This simple sorting step prevents many unnecessary calls and avoids requesting the wrong replacement document.

03

Choose the official application and a supported setup

Begin at MLIT's electronic-certificate portal rather than choosing an application because its name resembles a search phrase. The portal links to the official distribution routes and explains the supported environments. Those requirements can change, so this article does not freeze a particular phone model or operating-system version as a permanent recommendation. Confirm compatibility on the official page before buying a reader, installing software or assuming that an older household device can complete the task.

The setup differs by device. A supported smartphone uses its appropriate contactless reading function. An Android tablet follows its own supported route. The Windows computer route requires a suitable IC card reader. MLIT's FAQ explains that connecting a phone to a computer does not make the phone a substitute for the PC reader. If you are trying the computer option, check the computer, reader and application as a complete setup rather than testing each item in isolation. A device that works for another kind of contactless card is not automatically sufficient evidence for this use.

MLIT also explains that the computer application's first launch needs an internet connection, even when offline reading is intended later. On a managed work computer, ask the administrator about installation restrictions instead of bypassing them. For a borrowed family phone, agree where the downloaded files will go and whether reminders will stay enabled on that device. These are practical organization questions, not a reason to upload personal records to an unfamiliar service. If the setup is unsuitable and the deadline is close, ask a workshop about checking the original and current record. Buying equipment is not always the fastest or most economical solution to a one-time problem.

04

Diagnose a reading problem without damaging the certificate

A failed reading does not, by itself, establish that the vehicle's inspection has expired or that the certificate is invalid. Treat it as a reading problem until the relevant record is checked. Write down whether the application opens, whether the security-code step completes, whether an error appears and whether any information is displayed. That sequence makes a help request useful. Saying that the app is broken gives the person assisting you much less to work with than describing the stage where it stops.

Follow the official instructions for the reading position on your particular device. The certificate's tag and the device's reader must be correctly aligned, and the document needs to remain still long enough for the process. MLIT's FAQ identifies positioning issues and, for the computer route, examples such as presenting the document before the code is entered or moving it away immediately after a sound. Do not assume that a brief beep means all data has been successfully obtained. Change one condition at a time so you can identify what actually improves the result.

Avoid physical experiments with the document. Do not microwave a damp certificate or use heat to try to repair the tag. MLIT specifically warns about damage and fire risk from microwave heating. If the printed information or IC tag is damaged, check the official reissue process rather than inventing a home repair. For ordinary difficulties, a short note can say: original available, supported phone checked, code entered, reading stops at this message. Keep personal identifiers out of public posts or screenshots. Once a reading succeeds, confirm that it belongs to the correct vehicle before copying its expiry date into any calendar or message.

05

Understand online and offline results

Check both the connection and the application's selected mode. A connected phone can still be using an offline setting, and an offline reading is not a promise that every relevant item has been retrieved from the current server record. MLIT distinguishes information read from the tag from information obtained through the online service. That distinction matters when you need a PDF, recall information or remarks that are not fully contained in the tag.

The official FAQ lists functions limited in offline mode, including saving inspection-record PDFs and displaying certain related information. Use those explanations to choose the appropriate route for the task. If you only need to understand what is physically recorded on the tag, an offline result can be informative within its scope. If you need a current downloadable record or a related-information check, confirm the online requirements. Do not infer that there are no recalls simply because an offline screen has no recall panel. Even the online recall display is not a complete replacement for checking with the manufacturer or dealer.

When a workshop is deciding how to check a vehicle during a service outage, the official rules concern what the business can establish from current records. They are not permission for a driver to declare any old printout sufficient. Let the workshop assess the actual documents and applicable procedure. Record the retrieval date and mode in your own notes, and explain any recent renewal or registration change. If the system is temporarily unavailable, check the official notice and ask the workshop how to prepare. Continue arranging the appointment rather than waiting silently for the technology to recover. An outage affects access to information; it does not automatically change the legal expiry date or make an unconfirmed appointment secure.

06

Turn a confirmed expiry date into an actionable calendar

Find the field describing the end of the inspection's validity, not simply the nearest date on the screen. The date when a record was downloaded, the certificate was issued or the car was first registered answers a different question. Match the vehicle before recording the deadline. In a household with two similar cars, a neutral nickname such as family compact or commuter car can prevent an accidental mix-up without putting full identifiers into a shared calendar.

Next, turn the deadline into several decisions rather than one alarm. Decide when to request a quote, when the car can be unavailable, whether a loaner is necessary and when you need confirmation of completion. The free date planner can organize a confirmed date and an inspection window, but it does not reserve a place or determine whether repairs will be needed. A calendar event is an aid to planning, not a garage commitment. Check the actual vehicle record and workshop response before treating a proposed visit as settled.

Consider a hypothetical driver who reads the certificate on a Sunday evening and finds that expiry falls during a busy working week. The useful action is not to set an alarm for the morning of expiry and forget about it. The driver can list two acceptable arrival dates, a return deadline and a transport alternative, then contact suitable garages. If the first workshop cannot meet those conditions, the driver has time to compare another genuine quote. Keep the current expiry date visible until renewal is actually completed and checked. After renewal, confirm the new record before replacing the old calendar entry. This avoids turning a hopeful appointment date into a mistaken belief that the inspection has already been renewed.

07

Save useful records while keeping the original secure

A current inspection-record PDF can be useful for checking information calmly, preparing a workshop inquiry and keeping your own paperwork organized. Confirm where it was saved. Downloading a file and knowing how to retrieve it later are separate tasks, especially on a borrowed device. Choose a storage location you control and label the file in a way that distinguishes retrieval dates. If the application produces a filename containing a registration identifier, consider where that name may be visible before placing the file in a shared folder.

The PDF does not make the original disposable. Keep the physical electronic certificate and the supplementary record organized according to the official guidance, and confirm what the workshop wants you to bring. A printout can make a conversation easier because the information is readable without navigating a screen. However, the government explanation distinguishes verification of the electronic file's signature from a paper printout. Printing a PDF does not preserve the same electronic verification mechanism. Do not tell a garage that a printout has been authenticated merely because it came from a saved file.

For an initial inquiry, the garage may only need the make, model, expiry and a description of the problem. Ask before sending the entire record. If the workshop later needs the original or a full current record through a secure channel, follow its instructions and confirm the recipient. Avoid sending documents to a public comment thread or a generic address found in an unrelated advertisement. Keep a note of what you shared and why. After the visit, check that the certificate and any returned papers are back in the correct wallet. A reliable filing habit is often more useful than collecting multiple copies that nobody can confidently identify as current.

08

Check reminders after a phone change or renewal

The official application provides an expiry-notification service, but installing the application is not the same as completing notification settings for the correct vehicle. MLIT describes advance notifications at ninety, sixty and thirty days before expiry, plus a notification one day afterwards, subject to the service's setup and conditions. Check the vehicle registration within the application and the device's notification permissions. Treat the notifications as a useful reminder system rather than the sole evidence of your vehicle's current legal status.

A phone change deserves a specific review. The official FAQ explains that read information and settings do not simply transfer to the replacement device. Reinstall through the official route, read the valid certificate again and review the relevant settings. Deleting the application or receiving a newly issued electronic certificate can also affect notifications. Separate phone notifications from any email-notification option you have deliberately configured. If messages do not arrive, use the official FAQ rather than entering the same personal information into multiple unfamiliar reminder websites.

Keep a backup appointment-planning habit that does not depend on receiving a message. A household calendar can include a quote-request date and a document-check date, while the official record controls the actual expiry. After renewal, confirm that the new information and desired reminders are in place. The preparation-pack request on 車検.jp is independent of MLIT's service and does not automatically enroll anyone in government reminders. You can use our free planning material without giving us an email address. If you choose an email request, read the current readiness notice and consent wording; do not assume that saving a request means a notification has been delivered or that your vehicle's date has been verified by this website.

09

Prepare a focused workshop question

Describe the problem before sharing the document. A clear opening might be: I have the original electronic certificate, my supported phone opens the official application, but reading stops after the code step; I need to confirm the current expiry before arranging a quote. That message explains the practical need without exposing the code itself. Add your available consultation dates and ask what the workshop wants you to bring. The business can then explain whether it can assist and what its document-checking process requires.

Keep an app question separate from a registration correction. If the record displays an old address or an unexpected owner entry, the next step may concern an official change procedure rather than phone positioning. Similarly, confirming a deadline does not establish that the garage accepts your vehicle, has the required inspection capability or can return the car on the same day. Ask those questions separately. A short list of confirmed, pending and not applicable items makes the response easier to use than a long message containing every detail of your ownership history.

Use the urgent-request builder only as a preparation aid. It produces text that you can review, copy and send yourself. It does not transmit the request, book a slot or retrieve a certificate. Keep private identifiers out of the optional situation field. If a garage asks for the original or fuller records after the initial discussion, confirm the recipient and method before sharing. When it replies, record the actual visit time, what documents are expected, any consultation charges and the next unresolved question. These actions convert an information problem into a controlled appointment plan while preserving the difference between a requested service and one the garage has actually agreed to provide.

A worked example: the household with a new phone

This is a hypothetical preparation example, not a customer review or a claim of personal experience. A household replaces the phone that previously received inspection reminders. The old phone contains a certificate photograph and a downloaded record, but the new phone has only the freshly installed application. One family member assumes the notifications will return automatically; another thinks the absence of messages means the inspection is not due. Both assumptions leave the actual deadline unresolved.

The household first finds the original in the vehicle's document wallet. It checks that the new phone meets the current official requirements, then follows the application instructions to read the certificate. The date is compared with the correct vehicle, and a current record is saved in a controlled location. The family reviews notification settings rather than treating installation as enrollment. It also puts a quote-request date in the household calendar and writes down which weekdays require a loaner. The car's future inspection plan now rests on a confirmed record rather than the behavior of the old phone.

The next message to the garage is focused: the current expiry has been checked, the family can bring the original, and two arrival dates work if return timing and a suitable loaner can be confirmed. No full certificate is posted publicly to obtain that initial answer. After the conversation, the family distinguishes confirmed arrangements from possibilities and keeps the original in its normal place. Finally, it reviews files on the old device before disposal or transfer. The example shows why technical access, record accuracy, reminders and appointment confirmation are separate tasks. Completing one of them does not automatically complete the other three, but organizing them in this order can reduce avoidable confusion.

When copying dates between Japanese and English messages, write the year, month and day explicitly. A reply saying November fourth is clearer than an ambiguous pair of numbers. Ask the recipient to confirm the same date and vehicle, particularly when more than one family car is being scheduled.

11

A short worksheet for your next action

Use a compact worksheet instead of collecting more screenshots. Record the confirmed expiry, the retrieval date, where the original is kept, whether the record reflects the latest procedure and the one question still preventing you from arranging a visit. You can add preferred arrival dates and essential transport needs. This is a personal planning sheet; it does not need the full chassis number, security code or home address. Keeping those identifiers out of an everyday checklist makes it easier to share the schedule with family without distributing the entire vehicle record.

Mark each item according to its actual state. Original located is different from current expiry checked. Application installed is different from notifications configured. Quote requested is different from arrival confirmed. A small set of accurate states helps you decide what to do next. If the original is damaged or lost, follow the relevant official reissue route. If a record seems inconsistent after renewal, ask the workshop or appropriate authority to check it. If you cannot safely move the car, plan transport before deciding which appointment looks convenient.

The free preparation pack combines date, document and quote questions and remains available without registration. An optional email request is a separate choice and should follow the visible readiness and privacy information. Use the immediate pack if email delivery is not active. Once the garage answers, update the worksheet with its actual document instructions, acceptance conditions and expected completion. Keep reminders useful but subordinate to the current certificate record. The aim is to arrive with the right original, the right date and the right questions, while retaining control of your personal information and avoiding any assumption that an independent planning website has already verified or booked your inspection.

FAQ: electronic certificates and expiry checks

Is an expiry date missing from the small certificate a defect?

It can be normal for an electronic certificate to omit information from its printed face. Check the current record through the official application or an appropriate document-checking route before planning renewal.

Can I read the tag from a photograph?

No. The original electronic certificate is needed for the IC-tag reading. A photograph or photocopy is not the physical tag and cannot replace it for that process.

Does a reading error mean inspection has expired?

No conclusion about validity follows from the error alone. Check the device, reading position and official instructions, then establish the current vehicle record through an appropriate route.

Can my phone replace the computer's IC card reader?

MLIT's FAQ says a smartphone or tablet connected to the computer cannot act as the PC reader for this application. Check the supported computer and reader requirements instead.

Can I discard the original after saving a PDF?

No. Keep the original and treat the record PDF as supplementary information. Confirm the documents and presentation method required by the workshop or authority for the procedure you need.

Does offline mode show every recall?

No. Offline functions are limited, and the online recall display also has a defined scope. Use the manufacturer's or dealer's current information when checking all applicable recalls or repair status.

Will reminder settings transfer to my new phone?

Do not assume so. The official FAQ explains that information and settings are not transferred automatically. Install the application, read the valid original and review notification settings on the replacement device.

When can official expiry reminders arrive?

MLIT describes notifications ninety, sixty and thirty days before expiry and one day afterwards, subject to setup and service conditions. Check notification permissions and keep your own planning calendar as a backup.

Must I send 車検.jp my security code?

No. This website does not read your IC tag or require your code for its free planner. Enter the expiry you have confirmed yourself, without uploading your full certificate.

Can I drive to the garage after expiry?

Do not drive the vehicle on public roads with an expired inspection. Ask about transport and the applicable official procedures. A booking, reminder or app result does not independently authorize that journey.
