Nationwide coverage, with a clear definition.
Municipalities, postal address units, postal codes and web pages are different counts. We use Japan Post names and reconcile municipality totals for each prefecture with J-LIS’s published figures.
How many places are there in Japan?
| Category | Count | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Cities | 792 | 20 designated cities + 772 other cities |
| Towns | 743 | Municipal towns |
| Villages | 183 | Villages in the J-LIS count |
| Tokyo special wards | 23 | Counted separately from cities, towns and villages |
| Total | 1,741 | 1,718 cities/towns/villages + 23 special wards |
| Designated-city administrative wards | 171 | Subdivisions of the 20 cities; not additional municipalities |
| Japan Post local address units | 1,892 | 1,741 − 20 + 171 |
| Distinct postal codes | 120,717 | Deduplicated by postal code alone |
| Local postal-area pages | 120,874 | Unique local-unit / postal-code combinations |
The currently published J-LIS table is dated October 1, 2018 and was checked on September 30, 2026. Its count excludes six Northern Territories villages. Administrative wards are counted from our imported postal data. Districts group towns and villages and are not additional municipalities.
Would 500,000 pages cover every place?
Page count cannot establish complete coverage. The J-LIS town and aza file contains about 670,000 records as of April 2026, including historical names that have been abolished. It does not represent 670,000 current municipalities.
Our public URL export contains 245,808 URLs, counting Japanese and English separately. We cover the names in the imported Japan Post dataset; we do not create individual pages for every chome, minor locality, street address, station, informal name or business-specific postal code.
Finer address coverage requires reconciliation with sources such as the Digital Agency’s address base registry and useful, verified local information. Replacing place names across more pages does not guarantee search rankings or requests.

Population, vehicles and inspections are different measures.
| Measure | Count | Scope / reference date |
|---|---|---|
| Total population | 122,650,000 | September 1, 2026 provisional estimate |
| Total vehicles | 83,086,808 | June 30, 2026; includes non-passenger and non-inspection categories |
| Passenger vehicles | 62,292,502 | June 30, 2026; private and business use |
| Private passenger vehicles | 61,839,584 | March 31, 2026; 1.001 vehicles per household |
| Registered-vehicle renewal inspections | 21,641,257 | MLIT fiscal 2025 annual report |
| Kei renewal inspections | 13,000,696 | Fiscal 2025; counter + OSS applications |
| Combined renewal inspections | 34,641,953 | April 2025–March 2026; our sum of the two source totals |
Population and vehicle counts do not tell us how many individual people own cars or need inspection today. People may own multiple cars, companies own vehicles, and validity periods vary. Inspection events are not unique people. These statistics cannot identify the names, emails or exact number of people with expiry in the next 90 days.
Local pages should help people make a decision.
Regional pages provide address sources, date planning, document and quote preparation, and an optional request form. Visitors choose whether to share their name, email and expiry. Inbox confirmation is separate from car ownership or expiry verification; form entry alone does not make a verified customer.
An address listing does not prove the presence of a garage, a partnership, same-day availability or a discount. Garage-specific information needs confirmed addresses, prices and acceptance conditions, with a verification date.
